Women's Blues Bosh the Scum
17/11/2010
Cambridge won 15-9
A rivalry going back nearly 800 years, both teams unbeaten this season, 2 shades of blue and only one winner possible. Quite a formidable set up for the Cambridge v. Oxford game this Wednesday played on Queens pitches in Cambridge.
The match started slowly for Cambridge with the dark blues keeping possession of the ball for longer than was comfortable. A good set up from Georgie Hurt led to the first score of the day from cambridge co-captain Laura Plant, however Oxford quickly retaliated and for a while the scores
crept up with Oxford equalising at any opportunity but never taking the lead. A great grudge match was played by former captain Chip McClure, who attributes her spectacular defensive performance to wanting revenge for losing varsity in 2004- the last time she encountered the dark side.
A surge in pitch-side supporters led to some much improved play in the second half from the home side. Some wide attack play allowed Cambridge the space to break holes in the Oxford defence leading to stunning goals notably from stylish-scorer Georgie Prichard, the nifty Ellie Russel and last year's vice-captain Angharad West. A lapse in Cambridge defence led to
a run of 3 goals from the Oxford attack, however it was too late for a come back and Cambridge re-asserted themselves to finish with a comfortable margin of 6 goals. Final score 15-9.
